Weekendje Lowlands
Well I am back and recovering from my Lowlands weekend with my buddy Jurriaan. For those who don’t know, Lowlands is a kickass rock festival in the province Flevoland of the Netherlands. The festival is three nights of rock music, with camping each night at the place itself.
To start the trip, I’d packed my bags, mixed my drinks and was going over a mental checklist of what I needed. The time was 12:10, and I was meeting Jurriaan on a train at 12:28 when I realised my concert ticket was at work… So cycling back to the lab, picked up the ticket, back home, grab my bags, arrive at station at 12:27. Doh!
Getting to the campsite took a 1.5 hour train ride, 0.5 hr taxi ride, six beers, a packet of chocholate cookies and half a litre of mixed apple juice / vodka. Arriving at the concert, we noticed a door-like fence, so we walked straight in. We learned later that this was the entrance for service personnel, but since noone stopped us…
The whole weekend we had fat music: the Prodigy, Korn, Foo fighters, Queens of the Stone age, Nick Cave and the bad seeds (ok they are Australian but phsychedelic and funky!), Marilyn Manson (he is one ugly motha fu***).
Because we are such serious guys, we even went to a lecture by Wubbo Ockels, the first Dutch guy to go into space. I was extremely proud of myself as I understood the whole lecture! Directly after his lecture we saw Brain Power, a Dutch (\Surinaamse) Rap group, and I was brought back down to earth because I could barely catch even a single word of it…
Highlights:
* Jumping over the barrier to avoid a queue for the moshpit for the Prodigy while the security were facing the other way
* Walking straight in to Lowlands through a service entrance, avoiding a 2 hour queue.
* The funky music of Nick Cave
* Lots of pizza
Lowlights
* Wearing thongs in the moshpit surrounded by 16yr olds with Korn playing…
* A bad reaction to a joint on Saturday night
* Lots of pizza
Anyway it was a great weekend, and I’ll definitely be back for it for next year.
Joey.

Cool man! I didn’t know so many famous bands were playing there… And for sure the mix of music (and the rest) worth the experience

Hubo suffered an heart attack earlier this week, and is in coma.. It’s sad, I enjoyed his classes too… but it’s weird, I guess it happened just after Lowlands..

wearing thongs….i pray to the sweet lord almighty that you’re referring to what you wear on your feet, and not something else.

pity about wubbo - at least you got to hear him speak. how old is he?

when you’re thongs in the mud, I mean, doesn’t make much difference… well, it does, still, but it’s always unpleasant, no?
