One More Thing…

apple bites mumblings

…so to say, I almost forgot… these are the words everyone was expecting yesterday at SF’s MacWorld. And Steve Jobs, Apple CEO did it.

The Intel processors are reality, dual-cores under the hood of the iMac and the MacBook Pro (any better name??).
After the fireworks, what’s your opinion about it? I think, and I’m not alone, they presented something still to be refined, a sort of working prototype (to not to speak about the prices!). In fact, other manifacturers are getting there with the dual-core cpu, and Apple wanted to show how competitive it is.
On the other hands, Apple Os X 10.4 is already working, and very well, on Intel architectures (while Vista keeps on trying…).

Bah, lot of meat on the fire… should you add some spices on it, your comments here or in the forum will be appreciated.

Well, I will check a bit little further what news there is for Mac world, with these new intel processors inside…

If it can help software creators to publish some softwares you only have on windows(like AutoCAD, XSI, 3D studio, I am archictect so I am speaking about what I need), maybe the switch will be easier… If it’s made, living without windows won’t be too hard for me…
But I am very curious about the architecture of that processor, I mean the old good G4 used to have some vectorial hardwired unit, that make easier to create some effects on the OS. Then, when you look of the frequency, I hope the architecture of that processor in the good looking Ibookpro (1999$ for a 15” …Ouch!…) is nearer from a Pentium M than a pentium 4… If it’s true, this is the first intel processor with double core that give up the netburst architecture…

Hopefully, we won’t see too much difference except maybe a drop in prices and a enhanced range of more powerful laptops. If Apple is smart, the average user will not know the difference between the two processors (except performance, which I think should be better for the new Intel range), and what might perhaps be an emulator/os that can run most windows apps.

I think Joe is right in that maybe more software will be now available for the IntelMac range.

Sign me up for one who’s very very interested in getting one maybe a year or so after release of the first one.

I’m really curious to see when other double-core machines will come out: will photoshop on macOS be faster than the one on Win?

  4. Joejoe Says:

Well, that’s another debate… You should compare the same processor, and there isn’t any proof that intel will distribute the same architecture for PC. Of course they intend to release some double core pentium M…
After that, knowing what app is quicker than another, see some tests made winth windows agains linux. In pure calculation, like a 3d rendering, windows is as fast as linux. BUT windows doesn’t use the same alount of RAM, and crashes sometimes more, sometime less than linux.
With a such powerful processor, here I search stability (which I almost have with windows 2000) not 2 % speed improvement

Last thing to say: I doubt photoshop is multiprocessor programmed (most of programs aren’t , I only know programs that encode something, like video encoding, or 3d rendering), so I don’t think you will have the advantage of the double core, on the other hand, you will be able to do some burning, ripping, encoding in the same time with less time waiting.

i guess the changes are starting. World of Warcraft, a massive multiplayer online game, which plays on PC’s is being worked on to run on the IntelMacs. Looks like the reasons for the switch are becoming clear. Maintain the Mac name and atmosphere, but make it simpler to develop code for, so they can really start to give MS a run for their money. Brilliant.
